Mold Loss Prevention Specialist (MLP)

The Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industries (FWCI) has teamed up with Chelsea Group, Ltd. and the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) to offer a certification program designed to educate field personnel how to prevent mold damage during construction. This program is designed for:

  • Safety Personnel

  • Field Superintendents

  • Project Managers

The MLP course is designed to educate field personnel on how to prevent mold damage during construction through good communications and construction practices. Should mold develop on a project site, the course will instruct you on how to identify the mold and how to resolve the mold problem. At the end of the course, attendees will have the option to take an examination administered by IAQA.

Prerequisites

 

There are no prerequisites for taking the course but you must meet the following to qualify for the examination:

  • A high school diploma or GED, PLUS:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of one year’s experience installing wall and ceiling materials in residential and/or commercial buildings;

  • Candidates must attend the full two-and-a-half-day MLP educational seminar produced in partnership with FWCI.

The course schedule for the Mold Loss Prevention course is as follows:

 

First Day Morning Session -- Mold: Cause, Effect, and Response

  • Mold and construction liability

  • Mold and health effects

  • Mold impacts on construction

  • What makes mold grow

 

Afternoon Session -- How to Prevent Mold Damage During Construction

Planning and design stage

  • Materials selection, procurement and scheduling

  • Transportation, set down, pre-installation protections

  • Dry-in, inspection, preparation, and installation

  • Building water and humidity dynamics post-installation

 

Second Day Morning Session -- Mold Happens: How to Identify and Resolve Mold Problems

  • Identifying problems before, during, and after installation

  • Hiring and managing a consultant

  • Standards of care: interpreting reports and recommendations

  • Managing remediation and verifying results

  • Protecting occupants and workers

 

Afternoon Session -- The Future of Buildings: Technology to Reduce Mold Risk

  • Materials selection

  • Flexible zoning and space design

  • Interior finishing and furnishing

  • Ventilation and energy management

  • Moisture control

  • Pressurization management

  • Air cleaning

  • Maintenance

  • Antimicrobials

  • Cleaning compounds

  • Instrumentation

 

Third Day Morning Session -- Risk Management and Loss Prevention Procedures

  • Insurance exclusions for indoor pollution and mold

  • Auditable loss prevention program

  • Third party review process

  • Financial risk management process
